Situated in the Ujani Majuli and North-Eastern Region of the world-renowned river island of Majuli, Ujani Majuli Kherkatia College, Ratanpur Miri, was established in the year 1973 with the noble objective of extending the opportunities of higher education to the educationally underdeveloped and geographically isolated areas of Majuli and its adjoining regions. Since its inception, the college has been rendering dedicated service in the field of higher education and has emerged as a significant centre of learning in the region.
The institution owes its present existence and academic stature to the relentless struggles, sacrifices, and unwavering commitment of its teachers, employees, and the local community. Beginning its journey with a limited number of students and amidst numerous socio-economic and infrastructural challenges, the college steadily progressed and achieved Pre-Degree recognition in 1983. Subsequently, it obtained Degree affiliation under Dibrugarh University in 1987 and was brought under the Deficit Grant-in-Aid system in 1988, thereby marking important milestones in its institutional development.
Despite being situated in an educationally backward and geographically detached area, the college has consistently endeavoured to disseminate the light of knowledge and foster a congenial academic atmosphere for teaching, learning, and research. The institution remains firmly committed to the intellectual, moral, cultural, and physical development of its students. Along with imparting quality education, the college seeks to inculcate in learners the values of discipline, integrity, social responsibility, patriotism, and humanism.
Recognising the importance of holistic education, the college actively encourages students to participate in extracurricular and co-curricular activities, including games and sports, music and cultural pursuits, community service, and various extension activities. Through such initiatives, students are inspired to develop leadership qualities, teamwork, self-confidence, and a spirit of social commitment. The institution also strives to prepare learners to face the challenges of the modern world with competence and confidence, enabling them to become responsible, self-reliant, and productive citizens of society.
The college firmly believes that education is not merely a profession, but a sacred mission dedicated to the upliftment of humanity and the advancement of society. In recognition of its commitment towards quality education, Ujani Majuli Kherkatia College was accredited with Grade C+ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) in 2004. The institution was subsequently reaccredited with Grade B in 2023, reflecting its continuous efforts towards academic excellence and institutional quality enhancement. The college has also been provincialised under the Assam College Employees Provincialisation Act, 2005.
Continuous quality enhancement remains the guiding philosophy of the institution in alignment with the vision of the National Assessment and Accreditation Council and the University Grants Commission. With unwavering dedication, the college continues its pursuit of excellence in higher education, aspiring to nurture enlightened, skilled, and socially responsible citizens for the greater welfare of the nation and society at large.
